The Summer Reading Challenge 2020 was officially launched last week (Friday 5 June) on the Reading Agency’s Facebook page by a host of celebrity reading ambassadors and authors. This year the theme is all about being silly and celebrates funny books, happiness and laughter.
Children taking part in the challenge will join the Silly Squad, an adventurous team of animals who love to have a laugh and get stuck in to all different kinds of funny books! Everything counts from comics and joke books to fiction and non-fiction of any genre- whatever raises a smile!
The challenge is designed to encourage children aged 4-11 to read during the long summer holiday with research showing that children’s reading can ‘dip’ severely during the summer. This year the organisers have extended the challenge (Jun to Sept) to bring children together digitally while they’re not at school.
Visit the summer reading challenge website to create your account and pick an avatar from the Silly Squad. Select how many books you’d like to read this summer and start earning points. The website is filled with games, activities and a place to chat with other like-minded book worms.
