Last week we were delighted to welcome visitors to Wainwright Primary to talk with our children about homelessness within Mansfield. Last year our Pupil Leadership team identified that this issue was on the increase in our local community, and they wanted to do something to help those in need.
After finding out from the local night shelter that they were in need of more airbeds, our pupil leaders planned a non-uniform day and raised a wonderful £250 to spend on beds to support the shelter.
Phil Morton, from Derby City Mission (who have run the shelter in Mansfield since 2016) joined us to receive the cheque, and educated our pupils about his role and how the charity supports homeless people throughout our county. This support extends from giving them a roof over their heads, good food and somewhere to sleep, to supporting homeless people to find permanent accommodation, a job and a new direction in life.
We are looking into ways to continue supporting the night shelters in Mansfield in 2020 as we strive to make a difference in our local community. Thank you to our parents and carers for their generous support once again, and to Mr Morton for joining our assembly.
